Video footage verified by the BBC showed the drone approaching a cliffside before exploding in a fireball on the beach amid tourists. Eyewitnesses described hearing gunfire prior to the blast, suggesting Russian air defenses attempted to intercept the drone. Some Ukrainian sources claim electronic warfare disrupted the drone’s controls, causing it to crash.
The beach area is a popular holiday spot, especially for Russians, as international travel restrictions remain in place due to sanctions. Witnesses noted the absence of warning sirens before the strike, with one tourist recalling covering themselves with sun loungers and another describing the distressing scene unfolding before their children.
Context of Increasing Cross-Border Strikes
Over the past year, Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes into Russian territory, targeting energy infrastructure and warehouses alleged to support military operations. Recent attacks have resulted in civilian casualties, including eight deaths over a recent weekend in various Russian cities.
On the same day as the beach incident, a drone strike hit a warehouse near St Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, according to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its military campaign inside Ukraine, frequently targeting residential areas and causing significant civilian harm. In a recent missile strike on Kyiv, at least nine people died and many were injured, with residential buildings damaged and residents trapped.
Ukrainian attacks have also focused on warehouses operated by Wildberries, a major Russian online retailer accused by Kyiv of supplying the Russian military. Multiple Wildberries facilities across Russia, including locations far from the Ukrainian border, have been targeted in recent weeks.
