Renewed drone strikes in Sudan have resulted in significant civilian harm and disrupted humanitarian operations, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

On Sunday, a drone strike by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) targeted a traditional court in the village of Ghara al Zawiya, North Darfur, killing at least 35 people and injuring many others. The attack highlights the growing risks faced by civilians in conflict zones across Sudan.

Humanitarian Impact

The capital of North Kordofan, El Obeid, has also experienced recent drone attacks which threaten critical infrastructure and hinder aid delivery. UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher emphasized the urgency of expanding lifesaving assistance to families affected by ongoing fighting in the region.

Fletcher urged all parties to the conflict to reduce hostilities, protect civilians, and guarantee unhindered humanitarian access. Despite efforts, only about $1.2 billion of the $2.9 billion needed for Sudan’s humanitarian response this year has been funded.

Diplomatic Efforts Underway

The United Nations, alongside the African Union, IGAD, the League of Arab States, and the European Union—collectively known as the Quintet—are engaging Sudanese political leaders to support a Sudanese-led peace process. Recent talks have focused on confidence-building measures and advancing political dialogue.

UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, continues to meet with key stakeholders, including Sudan’s Foreign Minister and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), to encourage concrete steps toward de-escalation and cessation of hostilities. Haavisto is scheduled to visit Türkiye to consult with national authorities and Sudanese community representatives.
