Eddie Howe has announced his resignation as head coach of Newcastle United, concluding a transformative five-year spell at the Premier League club.
The 48-year-old manager cited personal reflection and the need to recharge as key reasons for his departure. Howe expressed deep gratitude for his time at the club, describing it as "the privilege of my lifetime."
Managerial Achievements
- Guided Newcastle to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the League Cup in 2025.
- Secured Champions League qualification twice, in 2023 and 2025.
Despite these successes, Newcastle endured a difficult 2025-2026 season, finishing 12th in the Premier League with 17 losses. Howe's final match was a 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.
Coaching Staff Changes
Alongside Howe, several key coaching staff including Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone, and head of performance Dan Hodges are also departing.
Next Steps for Newcastle
The club has thanked Howe for his "extraordinary contribution" and is expected to appoint German coach Matthias Jaissle, currently at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, as his successor. Both clubs share ownership under Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
Newcastle is also undergoing significant squad changes, having sold key players such as striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, and winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes may also be transferred.
