Lake Ol’Bolossat, nestled on Nyandarua’s Kinangop Plateau, is Kenya’s only natural freshwater lake and a vital sanctuary for diverse bird and wildlife species. However, the lake faces mounting threats from poaching, illegal fishing, deforestation, pollution, and encroachment.
To bolster protection measures, conservation groups are advocating for the lake to be recognized as Kenya’s seventh Ramsar Site. This international designation, under the Ramsar Convention established in 1971, highlights wetlands of global ecological importance and promotes their sustainable use.
Stakeholder Collaboration Advances Protection
The East Africa Wildlife Society (EAWS), in partnership with the National Environment Management Authority and Nyandarua County government, recently held a two-day workshop in Ol Kalou. The event united government officials, researchers, conservationists, community members, and local residents to assess progress on the lake’s integrated management plan, identify conservation gaps, and set priority actions.
During the workshop, participants validated the Ramsar Information Sheet, a critical document detailing Lake Ol’Bolossat’s ecological and hydrological significance. This validation strengthens the technical foundation for the lake’s Ramsar nomination.
Significance and Future Prospects
- Lake Ol’Bolossat supports local livelihoods and serves as a key habitat for cranes and other wildlife.
- Wetlands like Ol’Bolossat provide essential services such as freshwater supply, flood control, groundwater recharge, carbon storage, and climate resilience.

The initiative is part of a project by EAWS, the Wangari Maathai Institute, and the Wildlife Research and Training Institute, supported by the JRS Biodiversity Foundation. Conservationists believe Ramsar designation will attract increased protection, international cooperation, and public awareness, improving the lake’s chances of survival amid environmental pressures.
