Eight people lost their lives and three others were injured following a collision between a parcel truck and a tuk-tuk on the Mwea-Embu Highway at Murubara in Kirinyaga County.
The accident occurred when the speeding parcel truck, traveling from Mwea towards Embu, crashed head-on into a tuk-tuk moving in the opposite direction towards Ngurubani. The tuk-tuk was transporting farm workers to the Mwea Irrigation Research area for rice planting.
Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal confirmed that all eight fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene. Of the deceased, six were passengers inside the tuk-tuk while two were pedestrians hit along the roadside during the crash.
Eyewitnesses, including residents Bishop Carson and John Muriuki, described the collision as a high-speed head-on crash. They indicated the truck driver lost control after swerving to avoid potholes on the highway.
The parcel truck driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested at the scene. Two of the injured survivors were admitted to Kimbimbi Hospital, while the third, with more serious injuries, was transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary as investigations continue.
