At least eight people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Saturday morning along the Mwea-Embu Road in Kirinyaga County.
The collision occurred around 6:45 a.m. near Murubara village when a lorry travelling from Mwea towards Embu veered into the opposite lane to avoid potholes and collided head-on with a tuk-tuk.
Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal reported that the tuk-tuk was carrying farm workers heading to a rice planting assignment at the Mwea Irrigation Research area.
One additional person, a 27-year-old woman in the lorry, sustained minor knee injuries and was taken to Kimbimbi Level IV Hospital for treatment.
The lorry driver was arrested and is currently held in custody as investigations continue.
The deceased were transported to Kerugoya Level V Hospital Mortuary for preservation, postmortem examination, and identification.
Both the tuk-tuk and the lorry sustained extensive damage and have been impounded at the police station pending inspection.
