A recent study published in the journal Cell highlights the potential of arginine, an amino acid present in many everyday foods, to enhance the body's immune defenses against cancer and viral infections such as influenza and COVID-19.
Arginine is a non-essential amino acid the body can produce, but it is also abundant in protein-rich foods. Animal sources include turkey, chicken, beef, pork, fish like salmon and tuna, shellfish, eggs, and dairy products such as milk, yoghurt, and cheese. Plant-based options rich in arginine include pumpkin and sesame seeds, peanuts, various nuts, soybeans, tofu, lentils, chickpeas, peas, beans, as well as whole grains like oats, brown rice, whole wheat, and quinoa.
Study Findings
Led by Sohail Tavazoie, the research team conducted laboratory experiments on both mouse and human cells before testing dietary effects in mice. They discovered that a diet high in arginine significantly reduced colon tumor growth and improved immune responses to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 infections.
The study identified that arginine supports the production of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) proteins, which act as a cellular alert system. These proteins present fragments of viruses or abnormal cancer proteins on cell surfaces, enabling immune cells to recognize and eliminate threats early.
When arginine levels were low, MHC-I production decreased, weakening immune detection. Mice on arginine-deficient diets developed more tumors and showed poorer outcomes when infected with respiratory viruses. Conversely, those fed arginine-rich diets had higher MHC-I levels, fewer tumors, lower lung viral loads, reduced inflammation, and better survival rates.
Implications and Cautions
While findings are promising, researchers caution that these results are preliminary and based on animal models. They emphasize that it is too early to recommend arginine supplements for cancer or viral infection prevention in humans. Clinical trials are needed to evaluate safety and efficacy.
Experts advise maintaining a balanced diet incorporating natural arginine sources rather than relying on supplements until more conclusive evidence emerges.
