The Redemption Ministers Kenya have initiated the Just For Claire Initiative, a fundraising campaign aiming to raise KSh 5 million to fund reconstructive surgery for Mary Claire, a Seventh-day Adventist singer who survived a brutal acid attack in Nairobi.
Claire suffered extensive burns to her face and eyes after her estranged boyfriend allegedly hired an assailant to pour acid on her in March. Medical reports reveal severe ocular damage, with one eye partially restored through surgery, while the other remains seriously impaired.
Her injuries also include progressive hypertrophic and keloid scarring, causing nerve entrapment, restricted movement, chronic wound infections, facial disfigurement, and fibrosis. Doctors emphasize that specialized multidisciplinary treatment abroad is critical to preserve her remaining vision, restore function, alleviate pain, and improve her quality of life.
Current Medical Status and Support
Claire's hospital bills at Kenyatta National Hospital were partly covered by the Social Health Authority (SHA), and she continues to attend biweekly clinical reviews. Her sister confirmed recent surgery on the right eye has led to some improvement.
Despite a previous pledge of support from former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko during a hospital visit, the family has struggled to reach him since, leaving Claire's urgent needs unmet.

Legal Actions and Public Response
Authorities have arrested both Claire's estranged boyfriend and the alleged attacker, Lucas Ouma. Claire had reportedly endured multiple instances of abuse before the attack, which followed her decision to end the relationship. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation across Kenya, with calls for justice and support for the survivor.
