FIFA President Gianni Infantino has responded firmly to critics of the 2026 World Cup, dismissing allegations of mismanagement and negativity as "hate and false rumours." In an open letter published shortly after the tournament, Infantino emphasized the event's success in delivering joy and maintaining safety across the three host nations: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Addressing Controversies
The tournament faced scrutiny over high ticket prices, visa issues, and geopolitical tensions, including the participation of Iran despite ongoing conflicts with the United States. Infantino highlighted that millions of visas were granted, enabling teams and fans to attend without incident. He specifically noted that Iran’s team entered the US peacefully, underscoring football’s role in fostering unity beyond politics.
However, some teams voiced dissatisfaction. Iran’s coach Amir Ghalenoei described his team as the "most oppressed" at the World Cup, while star player Mehdi Taremi called their experience a "disaster." Additionally, Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to the US due to immigration policies, marking a notable exception in an otherwise smooth visa process.
Refereeing and Disciplinary Decisions
Infantino also addressed criticism over refereeing, particularly concerning a one-match suspension review for US striker Folarin Balogun, which was reportedly influenced by then-US President Donald Trump. European football authorities condemned the intervention as unprecedented and unjustifiable.
In defense, Infantino pointed out that controversial refereeing decisions and disciplinary rulings are common in major football leagues worldwide. He suggested that some critics were applying double standards by condemning practices they tolerate domestically.
