In the early hours of Saturday, an attack involving several gunmen near Virginia State University dormitories left five individuals wounded, one critically, sparking a prolonged campus lockdown.
Law enforcement, including campus police and Chesterfield County officers, responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. The victims were found outside the Quad Annexes and were promptly taken to hospital. Authorities reported that four victims are expected to survive, while one remains in critical condition.
Multiple Suspects at Large
The university confirmed multiple suspects were involved and advised the public to avoid the area. The lockdown, which restricted movement across the campus, lasted over seven hours and was lifted around 9 a.m.
A significant law enforcement presence remains as the investigation continues, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Chesterfield County police are leading the inquiry, with further updates anticipated.
Timing and Context
The incident occurred just days before the start of the academic year. Residence halls had opened a week earlier, and the orientation programme for new students had recently concluded. Virginia State University, a historically Black institution in Ettrick, Virginia, enrolls about 5,700 students and holds historical significance as the first fully state-supported four-year college for Black Americans.
No arrests have been made as investigations continue to identify those responsible for the shooting.
