Former Chief Justice David Maraga has openly criticised President William Ruto’s recent national address, casting doubt on the government’s claims of economic improvement since taking office.

Speaking shortly after the president’s speech on July 30, 2026, Maraga urged Kenyans to reflect on their personal economic situations, highlighting the rising costs of essentials like food, fuel, and education.

Maraga Questions Economic Gains

Maraga asked Kenyans to honestly consider whether their financial circumstances have improved, pointing specifically to household expenses and income levels. He expressed disappointment that the president’s speech failed to address pressing issues such as corruption and constitutional adherence.

Corruption Concerns Highlighted

Notably, Maraga criticised the absence of any mention of corruption in Ruto’s address, emphasising the significant financial loss Kenya suffers daily due to corrupt practices.

“Not once did he mention or denounce corruption, despite the fact that Kenya loses about 3 billion shillings a day,” Maraga stated.

Ruto’s Address on National Development

In contrast, President Ruto outlined economic achievements, including stabilising the Kenya shilling, boosting foreign exchange reserves to over US$15 billion, and attracting a record US$3.2 billion in foreign direct investment in 2025. He also highlighted Kenya’s ranking as Africa’s most competitive economy in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking.

The president announced a National Conversation on Kenya’s Future Beyond Vision 2030, set to commence on August 12, 2026, aiming to develop a long-term framework to advance economic and social rights and propel Kenya towards industrialisation and high-income status.

Political Context

Maraga, who is the United Green Movement Party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, has positioned himself as a critic of the current administration’s handling of economic and governance challenges. His remarks come amid broader national discussions about Kenya’s development trajectory and governance ahead of the upcoming elections.
