Ann Mathu, once crowned a beauty queen in Nairobi and now a vocal advocate for addiction recovery, has revealed the struggles that shaped her life. Her journey includes a long fight against alcoholism, a calculated marriage abroad, and a commitment to helping others overcome substance use disorders.

Early Exposure to Alcoholism

Ann’s relationship with alcohol began at the tender age of 10, influenced heavily by her family environment. Her father’s own struggle with alcohol exposed her to drinking early, including visits to local dens where she first tasted Muratina, a traditional Kikuyu brew. Tragically, alcoholism claimed the lives of four of her close relatives, including her father, sister, brother, and niece.

Marriage Abroad and Failed Expectations

After her father passed away, Ann’s addiction deepened. She later entered a five-year relationship with a doctor who also battled alcohol dependency. Following his death, she was left without inheritance as his family claimed his estate.

A friend in Germany helped her relocate in an attempt to rebuild her life. While there, she married an elderly German man in his seventies, hoping to inherit his property after his death. Ann openly acknowledged this motive, with her brother even urging her to hasten the wedding upon hearing the man cough.

Unfortunately, the plan did not succeed. When her husband died, the German embassy in Nairobi informed her that without a will, she was not recognized as his widow and thus could not claim any inheritance.

Turning Point and Advocacy

Now sober for 22 years, Ann has transformed her experiences into advocacy. She speaks publicly to inspire women struggling with addiction, addressing the stigma that often silences those in recovery.

"Many women are battling substance use disorders in silence due to shame and societal stigma," she said. "My story is meant to give hope and encourage openness about recovery."
