Fred Matiang'i, the Jubilee Deputy Party Leader, has been officially inducted into the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition's National Council. This move comes as part of a broader effort to reorganize and rebrand the coalition's leadership and structures.
The appointments were announced by Azimio Council Secretary General Caroli Omondi following a leadership meeting. Alongside Matiang'i, former Meru Governor Peter Munya and Senator Lenny Kivuti were also named new members of the National Council.
Coalition Reorganization and New Membership
Omondi explained that the council resolved to restructure various organs of the coalition to strengthen its political positioning. The rebranding initiative aims to enhance Azimio's unity and effectiveness ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
In addition to expanding its National Council, Azimio has extended invitations to several parties to join the coalition, including:
- DAP-Kenya, whose leader Eugene Wamalwa has indicated the party will rejoin after internal approvals.
- Umoja na Maendeleo Party
- Democratic Party
Leaders of these parties have expressed willingness to integrate with Azimio once their respective internal processes conclude.
Context and Political Implications
Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition was established ahead of the 2022 general elections, uniting parties such as ODM, Wiper, and Jubilee to support Raila Odinga's presidential bid. Despite losing to William Ruto, who ran under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, Azimio remains a key opposition force.
Recently, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka clarified that opposition leaders are independently strategizing for the 2027 elections, dismissing claims that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is orchestrating efforts against President Ruto. Kalonzo emphasized that the coalition's meetings, including those chaired by Uhuru, focus on strengthening Azimio rather than plotting political campaigns.
