Residents of Lamu County are now receiving free specialist surgical treatments closer to home, thanks to a collaboration between the Lamu County Government and Doctors Worldwide, a Turkish humanitarian medical organization.
For years, many residents faced expensive and challenging referrals to hospitals outside Lamu for specialist care. This new initiative, hosted at King Fahd Hospital, brings a team of 12 Turkish doctors to perform surgeries locally, significantly reducing the need for costly travel and accommodation expenses.
Medical Outreach and Capacity Building
The ongoing partnership, initiated in 2024, not only provides direct surgical services but also focuses on long-term capacity building. Lamu healthcare workers are participating in fellowship programs in Turkey, gaining specialized training to enhance local healthcare delivery.
Deputy Governor Mohamed Mbarak Bahjaj highlighted that this initiative improves access to specialist care and equips local doctors and nurses with advanced skills, aiming to decrease dependence on external referrals over time.
Range of Specialist Services Offered
- Urology procedures
- Gynecological surgeries
- General surgeries including hernia repairs and treatment of lumps and ulcers
The visiting medical team’s work has helped reduce the backlog of patients awaiting surgery and expanded access to services that were previously difficult to obtain on the island.
Community Impact
Many patients expressed relief at receiving treatment without the financial strain of traveling outside the county. One patient noted the importance of recovering near family without the burden of extra costs, while relatives of other patients acknowledged how the outreach eased the financial pressure associated with referrals.
This collaboration represents a significant step toward strengthening Lamu’s healthcare system, improving both immediate patient outcomes and the skill set of local healthcare professionals.
