Reverend Simon Mwangi, now a respected associate pastor at Parklands Baptist Church in Nairobi, once lived a vastly different life marked by hardship and gang affiliation in Korogocho.

Early Life and Challenges

Growing up in Nairobi estates including Mbotela, Kibagare, and eventually Korogocho, Simon’s childhood was shadowed by domestic violence and poverty. His father, an employee at the former Income Tax Department, struggled with alcoholism and abuse, which deeply traumatized Simon and motivated his early rebellious actions.

By the age of 10, Simon was involved in gang activities, including robberies targeting perceived wealthy individuals. A near-fatal encounter with mob justice at 12 left him questioning his path after he was beaten but spared from death.

A Turning Point Through Faith

Simon’s transformation began in high school during a sermon on John 3:16, where he first understood the concept of unconditional divine love. Despite the challenges of living in a crime-ridden environment, he embraced Christianity and joined the Christian Union.

His faith journey was supported by his mother’s prayers and the mentorship of church members from Parklands Baptist Church, who reached out to him even in the slums, offering guidance and hope.

Impact and Ministry

Today, Pastor Mwangi dedicates much of his work to prison ministry, visiting facilities such as Manyani, Industrial Area Prison, and Kamiti Prison. His own experiences drive his commitment to helping vulnerable youth and former offenders rebuild their lives.

One notable success story is Tyson, a former street child and glue addict whom Pastor Simon mentored back to education and sobriety. Tyson now runs a fitness company in the United States, exemplifying the transformative power of mentorship.
