Former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of scheming to arrest Auditor General Nancy Gathungu following her critical audit findings.
Speaking on July 31 at his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with Maasai leaders, Gachagua said his sources within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) informed him that President William Ruto had directed the DCI to gather evidence to prosecute Gathungu.
"I have been told that the President wants the Auditor General fished for evidence because her reports expose government theft," Gachagua stated. He added that the DCI was actively seeking grounds to detain her.
Gachagua suggested that Gathungu's audit reports on Kenya Kwanza administration programs had made her unpopular with senior officials. He also expressed concern over alleged political interference in the DCI, causing dissatisfaction among civil servants, police, and intelligence officers.
These allegations remain unverified, with no official responses from the Auditor General’s office, the DCI, or the National Police Service as of publication.
The accusations come shortly after Gachagua claimed prior knowledge of President Ruto’s State of the Nation Address content, including the announcement of a new national vision slated for public discussion starting August 12.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed the claims of leaked information, explaining that the President’s plans were discussed openly with Cabinet and technical teams over several weeks, negating any secrecy.
