Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has publicly criticised the arrest of Mukurweini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia, describing it as a politically motivated action aimed at silencing opposition voices.
In a statement released on Monday, August 3, 2026, Gachagua accused President William Ruto's administration of misusing the criminal justice system to target political adversaries rather than engaging them through democratic means.
Political Repression and Historical Parallels
Gachagua likened the current government's tactics to those of previous regimes that relied on selective law enforcement to suppress dissent, a strategy he said has historically failed.
He recalled how leaders allied to President Ruto were themselves subjected to arrests and intimidation before the 2022 General Election, an experience that ultimately galvanized their movement.
“The 4th Administration was notorious for using the criminal justice system to suppress dissent and force people to support an unpopular candidate. It didn’t work,” Gachagua stated.
He also pointed out the irony of President Ruto now employing the same methods he once condemned as Deputy President, questioning how occupying the presidency influences leaders’ judgment.

John Kaguchia was detained by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shortly after appearing on a political programme at Royal Media Services in Nairobi.

“The overnight harassment and early morning arrest of Hon. John Kaguchia today only strengthen the resolve of our supporters and elevate his standing within our leadership hierarchy,” Gachagua affirmed.
