Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that occurred along the Mwea-Embu Highway at Red Soil on the morning of August 1, 2026.
In a statement shared via his social media platforms, Gachagua extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the eight victims who died in the crash. He also wished a swift recovery to the injured passenger currently receiving treatment.
"I have learnt of the tragic road crash at Red Soil on the Mwea-Embu Highway with deep pain this morning," he said. "To those receiving treatment in hospitals, I wish you a speedy recovery. My prayers are with you."
Gachagua further prayed for strength for the bereaved families and eternal peace for the departed souls.
Details of the Accident
The collision involved a tuk-tuk carrying workers heading to a rice-planting job and a lorry. According to Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal, eight people lost their lives while one passenger sustained serious injuries and is admitted at Kimbimbi Hospital.
Eyewitness accounts indicate the lorry driver swerved to avoid potholes, lost control, and collided head-on with the oncoming tuk-tuk.
“The lorry was trying to avoid potholes when the driver lost control and hit the tuk-tuk,” said Jamric Kariuki, an eyewitness.
Calls for Road Safety Improvements
Residents have voiced concerns over the increasing number of accidents on this stretch, urging the Ministry of Roads to expedite repairs, fill potholes, and install speed bumps at dangerous sections.
Area Member of Parliament Mary Maingi echoed these sentiments, offering condolences to the victims’ families and urging the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) to erect speed bumps from Red Soil to Ngurubani town.
"As Mwea, we are saddened by this morning’s loss. We call on KENHA to install road bumps to reduce speeding and prevent further accidents," Maingi stated, while also advising drivers to exercise caution along the highway.
