Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the arrest of Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, describing it as a politically driven move that ultimately bolsters opposition support.
Kaguchia was detained on Monday morning shortly after leaving Royal Media Services, where he had reportedly stayed overnight following an appearance on Inooro TV's Kiririmbi programme. His arrest comes amid rising political tensions involving opposition figures.
In a statement, Gachagua accused the government of selectively applying criminal laws to suppress dissent, likening the tactics to those used by previous administrations against their political rivals. He argued that such actions fail to weaken opposition movements and instead increase public sympathy for those targeted.
"The use of the criminal justice system to manage politics is synonymous with outgoing, cowardly regimes," Gachagua said, noting that Kenya Kwanza leaders had previously criticized similar arrests when they were in opposition.
He further suggested a pattern where leaders shift from defending dissent to suppressing it once in power. Regarding Kaguchia’s arrest, Gachagua stated, "The overnight harassment and early morning arrest of Hon. John Kaguchia today only strengthen the resolve of our supporters and elevate his standing within our leadership hierarchy."
Lawyers representing Kaguchia are reportedly working to secure his release on bond ahead of his anticipated court appearance. Authorities have yet to publicly comment on the reasons behind the arrest.
The incident has sparked varied reactions, with opposition leaders questioning the timing of the arrest, while government supporters emphasize that all citizens are subject to the law regardless of political affiliation.
