Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly accused former Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri of betraying the Kikuyu community for personal political gain, signaling the end of Kiunjuri's political career in Laikipia.
Addressing supporters at a rally in Nanyuki on August 1, 2026, Gachagua alleged that Kiunjuri had compromised community interests by aligning himself with President William Ruto's administration. He claimed Kiunjuri benefited financially from government contracts, stating, "Hiyo pesa Mwangi Kiunjuri umepata imekutosha", which translates to "The money you have received is enough."
Political Fallout in Laikipia
Gachagua emphatically declared Kiunjuri's political tenure in Laikipia over, warning that neither Kiunjuri nor his family would find support in the county due to their perceived betrayal. He said, "Wewe Mwangi Kiunjuri na familia yako, watoto; hakuna kitu mtapata milele katika kaunti ya Laikipia kwa sababu ya kusaliti jamii yetu", meaning Kiunjuri and his family would never gain anything in Laikipia because of their disloyalty.
Mounting Mt Kenya Political Rivalry
This confrontation highlights growing tensions within Mt Kenya politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. Since his fallout with President Ruto and impeachment in 2024, Gachagua has been rallying support across the region to build a new political base.
Gachagua’s rallies increasingly target leaders perceived as abandoning Mt Kenya’s interests, accusing them of siding with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Kiunjuri, who serves as Laikipia East Member of Parliament and formerly headed the Agriculture ministry, has maintained close ties with President Ruto and participated in government-aligned activities.
The dispute underscores a fierce competition for political influence and resource allocation in Mt Kenya, with Gachagua criticizing the Kenya Kwanza government for marginalizing the region despite its electoral support in 2022.
