Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared a political offensive against several Mt Kenya leaders who supported the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the recent Ol Kalou by-election.

Speaking at a gathering with Murang’a leaders at his Wamunyoro residence on August 1, 2026, Gachagua accused some regional politicians allied to President William Ruto of betraying the community’s agreed political direction by campaigning for UDA’s Samuel Muchina Nyagah instead of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho.

Targeted Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Polls

Gachagua revealed that Mt Kenya elders have tasked him with holding these leaders accountable by campaigning against them in their constituencies during the 2027 general election cycle. He indicated that his campaign efforts will start in Kinangop Constituency before moving to Laikipia East, where he plans to oppose MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, whom he labeled as a major traitor to the community.

He also singled out Area MP Kwenya Thuku in Kinangop, promising to mobilize voters to reject him in the upcoming polls.

Expanded Campaign Trail

The former deputy president further announced plans to spend three days in Nakuru County beginning August 7, campaigning against Governor Susan Kihika. Gachagua accused Kihika of contributing to violence during the Ol Kalou by-election and vowed to thwart her re-election bid.

In Embu County, where he recently held rallies, Gachagua said he would return for additional events aimed at challenging Governor Cecily Mbarire, who supported UDA in Ol Kalou.

Before a scheduled trip to the United States later this month, Gachagua also intends to campaign in Kiambaa Constituency against MP John Kawanjiku, whom he accuses of instigating violence during the by-election and attacks on his convoy. Additionally, he plans to rally Kikuyu Constituency residents against National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, blaming him for opposing the DCP in the mini-poll.

Holding Leaders Accountable

Gachagua emphasized that these campaigns are designed to enforce political accountability for those who defy the Mt Kenya region’s collective political stance. He asserted that leaders who side against community interests will face voters in their home areas during the next general elections.
