Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed willingness to abandon his 2027 presidential ambitions if it helps prevent President William Ruto from securing a second term. However, he emphasized that the Mt Kenya region must be guaranteed a fair portion of government positions and development benefits in any political arrangement.
Speaking during a podcast interview on July 31, 2026, Gachagua stated he remains a presidential candidate but is open to persuasion from his allies if his candidacy risks splitting the opposition vote and handing victory to President Ruto.
Mt Kenya's Interests Paramount
Gachagua insisted that should he step aside to back another candidate, the Mt Kenya region must receive clear assurances of power-sharing and development commitments. He warned that the region’s political support cannot be taken for granted without such guarantees.
Focus on Defeating Ruto
The former deputy president reiterated his main goal is to ensure President Ruto serves only one term. He said he is prepared to sacrifice his political ambitions if opposition leaders convince him that uniting behind a single candidate offers the best chance to unseat the incumbent in the 2027 General Election.
His comments come amid ongoing coalition talks among opposition leaders, where negotiations are expected to focus on both the presidential ticket and the allocation of key government roles.
