Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has clarified that his political criticisms are aimed at disloyal leaders within the Mt Kenya region, irrespective of gender. He dismissed accusations from several women governors who claimed he was targeting female leaders.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) aspirants from Murang’a County on August 1, 2026, Gachagua emphasized his respect and support for women in leadership. He highlighted his close relationship with his wife and noted the strong backing he receives from female politicians and voters nationwide.
He cited prominent women allied to his political movement, including Kirinyaga Woman Representative, Naivasha MP, and Kipipiri MP, as integral to his leadership base.
Focus on Loyalty, Not Gender
Gachagua insisted that his issues are with 'traitors' who undermine the Mt Kenya community rather than with women leaders specifically. “A traitor is a traitor regardless of gender. In fact, women traitors are worse than men,” he remarked.
He warned that any leader perceived to have betrayed the region’s interests would face political repercussions, urging critics not to use gender as a shield.
Accusations of Aiding President Ruto
The former deputy president accused some leaders of collaborating with President William Ruto to marginalize the Mt Kenya community. “We cannot leave you alone when you assist William Ruto to persecute and humiliate our community. We will address this issue of traitors politically,” Gachagua stated.
These comments come amid growing political rivalry between Gachagua and leaders aligned with President Ruto as they vie for influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
