Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans to campaign against Mt Kenya leaders allied to President William Ruto who supported the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate instead of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in the recent Ol Kalou by-election.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro home during a meeting with Murang’a leaders on August 1, 2026, Gachagua said elders from the Mt Kenya region mandated him to confront those perceived to have acted against the community’s political interests by backing UDA in the mini-poll.

Targeted Constituencies and Leaders

  • Laikipia East: Gachagua’s first stop will be here to campaign against MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, whom he accused of betraying Mt Kenya by leading UDA’s campaign efforts in Ol Kalou.
  • Kinangop: He plans to mobilize voters against Area MP Kwenya Thuku, urging residents to reject him in the 2027 general election.
  • Nakuru County: Starting August 7, Gachagua will spend three days campaigning against Governor Susan Kihika, blaming her for violence during the by-election and vowing to oppose her re-election.
  • Embu County: Despite recent rallies, Gachagua intends to return for additional campaigns against Governor Cecily Mbarire, accusing her of supporting UDA in Ol Kalou and branding her among three female governors who have betrayed Mt Kenya.
  • Kiambaa Constituency: He will campaign against MP John Kawanjiku, linking him to violence and attacks on Gachagua’s convoy during the by-election.
  • Kikuyu Constituency: Gachagua plans to rally residents against National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, accusing him of opposing the DCP in Ol Kalou.

Political Accountability Ahead of 2027

Gachagua emphasized that these campaigns aim to hold leaders accountable for defying the political consensus of the Mt Kenya community during the Ol Kalou mini-poll. He warned that those opposing the community’s stance will face voters in their home constituencies ahead of the 2027 general election. His tour precedes a planned visit to the United States later this month.
