Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Rift Valley politicians to refrain from intervening in Mt Kenya's political affairs, urging them to concentrate on challenges within their own region.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Murang’a on August 1, 2026, Gachagua expressed concern over increased efforts by Rift Valley leaders campaigning in Mt Kenya on behalf of President William Ruto.
He noted that several Rift Valley politicians have been touring Mt Kenya attempting to sway residents to abandon their current political stance and support President Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election. Gachagua dismissed these efforts, stating that the political mood in Mt Kenya is firmly established.
Focus on Local Issues
Gachagua urged Rift Valley leaders to remain focused on their own constituencies and instead advise President Ruto on addressing Kenyans’ concerns during his remaining time in office. He emphasized:
- Rift Valley politicians should "remain in their backyard" rather than trying to influence Mt Kenya voters.
- They should use their time to counsel President Ruto rather than campaigning outside their region.
Claims of Betrayal by President Ruto
The former deputy president accused President Ruto of reneging on commitments made to the Mt Kenya community, which he said has led to declining support for the administration in the region. He insisted that Mt Kenya voters have resolved to pursue a different political path in the upcoming elections.
Plans to Tour Constituencies Opposing DCP
Gachagua also announced his intention to tour constituencies of Members of Parliament who opposed the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) during the recent Ol Kalou by-election. He indicated these visits would commence immediately and serve as a campaign to hold those legislators accountable to their voters ahead of the 2027 polls.
