Garissa Airport has officially resumed full operations after a comprehensive year-long refurbishment aimed at enhancing air transport and economic activities in Kenya's North Eastern region.
The upgrade project, spearheaded by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), involved extending the runway from 1,200 metres to 1,280 metres, constructing two new taxiways, and enlarging the apron to accommodate more aircraft and improve operational efficiency.
These improvements are expected to strengthen connections between Garissa and Nairobi, support humanitarian efforts, facilitate business travel, and enhance cargo movement throughout the North Eastern corridor.
Additionally, the Garissa County Government has developed a new terminal building designed to increase passenger handling capacity, further boosting the airport's functionality.
Earlier statements from KAA highlighted the near-completion of these rehabilitation works, with the upgrades attracting increased airline interest on the Nairobi–Garissa route. The enhanced facilities are projected to expand flight options and stimulate regional economic growth.
President William Ruto has praised the project as a vital contributor to economic development in Northern Kenya, noting that the upgrade was completed ahead of schedule.
