The German Football Association (DFB) has urged a comprehensive investigation into FIFA's recently abandoned plan to allow private investment in the World Cup. The call comes amid widespread criticism of the proposal and concerns over FIFA's decision-making processes.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino faced backlash after unveiling the controversial investment scheme, which was quickly withdrawn following strong opposition from UEFA and other continental football bodies. The DFB, which joined UEFA in opposing the plan and advocating for a boycott of FIFA events, has demanded greater transparency and a cultural shift within FIFA.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf criticized Infantino's unilateral approach, stating, "The FIFA President acted without transparency and irresponsibly regarding football's interests. Together with UEFA and other confederations, we must ensure a fundamentally different culture where decisions are made collectively by governing bodies' members."
Similarly, the English Football Association called for a thorough review of FIFA's leadership and governance to promote transparency in managing the global game.
The private investment proposal emerged shortly after FIFA announced record revenues from the 2026 World Cup, intensifying concerns about the governing body's priorities and governance standards.
