Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have advanced to the semifinals of the Cecafa Club Cup in Kigali, Rwanda, edging closer to their fourth title in the regional tournament.

The team topped Group A with six points following a narrow 1-0 victory over Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine FC at the Kigali Pele Stadium. The winning goal came early in the third minute from striker Paul Okoth.

Group Stage Performance

Gor Mahia began their campaign with a commanding 5-0 win against Rwanda’s APR FC and later suffered a 1-0 loss to Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club. The victory against Garde Républicaine was crucial as only the top team from each group and the best runner-up advance to the semifinals.

Despite finishing with the same points as Vipers and APR FC, Gor Mahia secured top spot in Group A thanks to a superior goal difference. Their semifinal opponent will be the best-ranked runner-up from the groups.

Team Selection and Strategy

Coach Charles Akonnor fielded a strong lineup against Garde Républicaine, reinstating key players such as goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, defenders Daniel Sakari and Alpha Onyango, midfielders Enock Machaka and Patrick Esombe, and forwards Sharif Musa and Paul Okoth. These players had not started in the previous match against Vipers.

Kenyan Representation and Other Teams

Gor Mahia’s progress contrasts with the fortunes of Kenya’s other representative, Tusker FC, whose hopes of advancing were dashed after a 1-0 loss to Rayon Sports of Rwanda. Having lost their opening game against Al Hilal SC of Sudan, Tusker cannot advance from Group C.

Tusker will play their final group match against Zanzibar’s Kikosi Cha Valantia (KVZ) on Saturday, aiming to end the tournament on a positive note ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
