Government Initiates Land Acquisition for 215KM Road Network in Kajiado and North Rift

The government has launched the process to acquire land for the construction of new roads totaling 215 kilometres across Kajiado, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot counties.

Road Projects and Scope

The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued several notices regarding compulsory land acquisition for two major road projects:

  • Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich Pass Road: This 124-kilometre corridor is divided into three segments:
    • Lot 1: 43km from Barpello (Moru) to Tot Junction
    • Lot 2: 46km from Tot Junction via Chesegon to Kopasi River
    • Lot 3: 35km from Kopasi River through Lomut and Sigor to Marich Pass
  • Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya and Kajiado-Imaroro Roads: A combined 91-kilometre stretch comprising:
    • Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya road (48km)
    • Kajiado-Imaroro road (43km)

The Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich Pass route also includes a proposed 7-kilometre Chesegon Bypass connecting Kabaldamet to Liter, situated within Lot 2.

Strategic Importance

The northern corridor traverses Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot counties, enhancing transport links within the North Rift region. This aligns with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen's vision for a highway connecting the North Rift to South Sudan, passing through key points such as Tot and Chesegon before reaching Marich Pass.

Landowner Engagement

The NLC is conducting consultations with affected landowners, who are invited to review project plans at NLC and county offices. An inquiry meeting is scheduled for September 16 at the Upper Matasia Chief's Office, providing a platform for landowners to discuss concerns and compensation related to the Ngong-Kiserian-Isinya and Kajiado-Imaroro roads.

These infrastructure developments form part of the government's broader agenda to expand and improve road connectivity across various regions in Kenya.
