The Ministry of Education has announced that the senior school selection process for Grade 9 learners will take place between August 24 and September 11, 2026. This exercise enables approximately 1.2 million students to choose their career pathways, subject combinations, and preferred senior schools through an automated placement system.

The selection comes as schools prepare for the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), with learners returning from their holidays during this period.

Pathway Options and Transition

Students will select from three main pathways:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Social Sciences
  • Arts and Sports Science

These choices will shape their senior school education and influence future career opportunities.

Concerns Over Delay

The selection timetable was delayed compared to previous years, when the process usually occurred in June. Education stakeholders have expressed worries that the shortened window may limit adequate career guidance and preparation time.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Deputy Secretary General Hesbon Otieno cautioned that the delay could cause confusion among learners and undermine confidence in the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

Similarly, Education Stakeholders Association of Kenya National Secretary Ndung’u Wangenye warned that rushed decisions might result in students choosing inappropriate pathways, which could negatively impact their academic and career trajectories.

Support From Parents’ Association

Contrasting views came from the National Parents Association (NPA), whose chairperson Silas Obuhasa backed the Ministry's timeline. He emphasized that the pathway selection process requires only a brief period and would not interfere with KJSEA preparations. The NPA also pledged to support outreach efforts through school dialogues involving parents, teachers, and other stakeholders.
