The Kenyan government has announced plans to begin monthly stipends for village elders nationwide starting August. This initiative aims to formally recognise the elders' critical contributions in grassroots administration, security, and community development.
Recognition of Village Elders' Role
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo disclosed the programme on July 31, 2026, during a public baraza in Rachuonyo North Sub-county, Homa Bay County. He noted that village elders have long played a vital role in maintaining peace, resolving disputes, mobilising communities, and supporting government initiatives without formal compensation.
"Our village elders have continued to serve communities diligently by promoting security and supporting government programmes at the grassroots. It is only fair that their contribution is recognised," Omollo said. The monthly allowance is expected to motivate elders and enhance collaboration between the government and local communities.
Development Projects and Health Initiatives in Homa Bay
Omollo also highlighted ongoing development efforts in Homa Bay County, noting a significant increase in road infrastructure projects from three to nearly twenty, covering approximately 454 kilometres since the Kenya Kwanza administration took office.
He encouraged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), which aims to improve access to affordable healthcare. Omollo praised community health promoters for aiding the rollout of this health financing system.
Young people in the county are also benefiting from the NYOTA programme, which provides skills training, business mentorship, and financial support to foster sustainable enterprises.
Call for Inclusive National Dialogue
The Principal Secretary urged all Kenyans to participate in national discussions to promote unity and address the country's challenges. "Building the Kenya we want requires the participation of every citizen," he emphasized.
