The Harambee Starlets bowed out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after finishing last in Group A, failing to secure any points or score a goal in their three matches.
Kenya’s campaign ended following a 2-0 defeat to Algeria at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium, confirming their early exit from the tournament. Hosts Morocco topped the group with seven points, while Algeria advanced with six, leaving Kenya and Senegal eliminated.
Prize Money Boost for Participating Teams
Despite the disappointing results, the Starlets will receive a participation fee from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which has increased the total prize pool for WAFCON 2026 by 67% compared to the previous edition.
- The overall prize money rose from KSh 449.5 million (USD 3.475 million) to KSh 750.4 million (USD 5.8 million).
- The champions will earn KSh 258.8 million (USD 2 million), double the last tournament’s winner’s prize.
- Each of the 16 teams, including Kenya, is guaranteed a minimum payout regardless of performance.
Kenya’s Harambee Starlets will collect KSh 19.4 million (USD 150,000), marking a 20% increase from the KSh 16.2 million (USD 125,000) awarded in the previous WAFCON. This financial boost reflects CAF’s commitment to growing women’s football across Africa.
