The High Court in Kerugoya has temporarily stopped the vetting and approval process of two presidential nominees to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), marking a legal challenge to President William Ruto’s recent appointments.
Justice Joyce Gandani issued conservatory orders on Thursday restraining the TSC, its committees, officers, and agents from proceeding with the vetting or approval of former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion and Antonina Lentoijoni.
The injunction will remain effective for 21 days, pending the hearing of a constitutional petition filed by Kelvin Wafula, who challenges the nomination process of the two individuals under Notification of Presidential Action No. XI of 2026.
According to the court order, no action should be taken regarding the nominations until the case is determined. The judge also warned that any breach of the order could lead to contempt of court proceedings.
The appointments were made following a presidential directive issued by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, aiming to fill vacancies within the TSC. The court recognized the urgency of the matter, granting immediate interim relief.
The matter is set for an inter partes hearing on August 18, where all parties will present their cases.
