Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has publicly condemned Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia for making statements deemed divisive and harmful to national unity. The rebuke came during a meeting held at State House on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Ichung’wah criticized Kaguchia’s remarks suggesting that supporters of President William Ruto in Kieni would be aggressively targeted, a comment he labeled as inciting ethnic tensions. “I heard someone recently say that those who choose William Ruto in Kieni will be sought even under their beds. We want to tell him he is a tribalist who must be defeated,” Ichung’wah declared to a crowd that responded with chants of “Ashindwe!”
The Majority Leader appealed to community elders and grassroots leaders to resist attempts by politicians to revive ethnic divisions and engage in destructive politics. “I respectfully ask you, as our elders and leaders at the grassroots, not to allow tribalists to drag us backward with divisive politics that harm our nation,” he said.
Ichung’wah also criticized leaders who defended politicians facing legal action over inflammatory remarks. He emphasized that true leadership involves condemning acts that threaten peace rather than exploiting them for political gain. “If you are a genuine leader, you must condemn those perpetuating criminality and endangering Kenyans’ lives, not defend them,” he stated.
MP Kaguchia Released on Bail
This reprimand follows a Kiambu High Court ruling ordering the release of MP John Kaguchia on a Ksh100,000 cash bail. Kaguchia was arrested on allegations linked to his divisive comments but filed a legal challenge against the arrest. Justice Njoki Mwangi granted his release pending further proceedings.
