The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appointed Ruth Kulundu as the acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary for a two-month period starting August 5, 2026. This appointment follows the conclusion of Moses Ledama Sunkuli's six-month tenure in the acting role.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon announced the transition in an internal memo dated August 4, emphasizing the need for staff to support Kulundu to ensure uninterrupted operations during this critical period.
"The Commission has appointed Ruth Kulundu to the position of Acting Chief Executive Officer/Commission Secretary, effective August 5, 2026," Ethekon stated. Kulundu will serve until a substantive CEO and Commission Secretary is recruited and appointed.
The appointment comes as the IEBC gears up for the 2027 General Election. Key preparations include voter registration, deployment of electoral technology, boundary reviews, and stakeholder engagement.
Ethekon also acknowledged Sunkuli’s contributions during his acting tenure, which began following Marjan Hussein Marjan’s resignation in February 2026.
Ruth Kulundu holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi, bringing strong academic credentials to the role.
