A recent field investigation led by the World Health Organization (WHO) anthropologist Jules Villa, alongside researchers from the University of Bunia and local social scientists, suggests that the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) latest Ebola outbreak began months before it was officially declared on May 15, 2026.
The study, conducted in the gold mining town of Mongbwalu in Ituri province, indicates that the virus had been spreading since at least January. The team spent over a month interviewing 97 individuals including healthcare workers, survivors, community leaders, and cemetery staff to reconstruct the early transmission patterns.

Since the official declaration, the DRC has recorded over 3,500 Ebola cases and at least 1,500 deaths, marking this as the country’s second-largest outbreak to date.
