The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has secured convictions against two police officers involved in fatal shootings in Nakuru County during 2016 and 2017.
In rulings delivered by the High Court in Nakuru in July 2026, Police Constable Francis Kiarie was found guilty of murdering John Maina and Charles Kariuki, who were shot dead on December 3, 2016, at Mercy Njeri Shopping Centre.
Separately, Administration Police Constable Isaac Lekachuma, formerly stationed at Salgaa AP Post, was convicted for the murder of Emmanuel Makokha, fatally shot on October 2, 2017, at Salgaa Trading Centre.
IPOA emphasized that these convictions mark a significant step in holding police officers accountable for unlawful use of lethal force. Both officers are currently awaiting sentencing by the High Court.
Established under the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, IPOA is tasked with investigating deaths and serious injuries linked to police actions and recommending prosecutions when evidence supports such measures. The authority stresses that accountability is vital for enhancing professionalism within the National Police Service and restoring public trust.
