Infotrak Research and Consulting unveiled its 2026 CountyTrak Performance Index on August 4, highlighting Kenya's top county governors based on key devolved functions.
Top Performers Across Counties
Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata secured the highest national ranking with an overall score of 54%, closely followed by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi at 52%, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya at 50%.
The index assessed county governments on four critical areas:
- Energy
- Environment and Natural Resources
- Culture and Sports
- Housing, Lands, and Settlement
Kiambu County led the Energy sector with a 56% score, while Murang'a scored 54%. Both Murang'a and Trans Nzoia jointly topped the Environment and Natural Resources category, each with 55%.
Regional Highlights
In the Nyanza region, Homa Bay County stood out as the best performer, tying for fourth place nationally alongside Elgeyo Marakwet, Kisii, and Uasin Gishu counties, each scoring 49%.
Nairobi Governor Absent from Top Rankings
Notably, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja did not feature among the leading governors, raising questions about service delivery in Kenya's capital and most populous county.
