Residents and traders in Isiolo have expressed outrage over the killing of businesswoman Angelina Kananu Lichira, demanding urgent police action in the investigation.
Kananu was fatally shot on the evening of July 20, 2026, while riding home on a motorcycle after closing her shop near the Isiolo market matatu terminus. The motorcycle rider was injured during the attack.
More than 11 days after the incident, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not updated the public on progress, prompting protests and temporary business closures across Isiolo town.
Community Condemns Rumors and Calls for Transparency
Some social media rumors suggested Kananu was involved in drug trafficking, but friends and family have strongly refuted these claims. Keziah Kabirithu, a close friend, urged the government to provide clear information to the family and the public.
"Kananu was not a criminal; we have never heard of her involvement in such activities. We condemn what happened to her and call on the government to communicate openly about the investigation," Kabirithu said.
Concerns Over Rising Insecurity and Illegal Firearms
Local residents linked Kananu's murder to a broader surge in violent crimes, including the recent disappearance of a market youth whose body parts were found but whose full remains remain missing.
Moses Kithinji, a neighbour, highlighted the lack of resolution in such cases and blamed authorities for failing to provide answers or arrests.
Another resident, George Kariithi, questioned how illegal firearms are circulating in Isiolo and demanded accountability from security agencies for the growing insecurity affecting traders and the wider community.
