Siaya Governor James Orengo formally welcomed former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa into the Linda Mwananchi movement at her home in Kakuyuni, Malindi, on July 31, a day after she left President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Speaking in his capacity as Linda Mwananchi party leader, Orengo highlighted Jumwa’s longstanding alliance with Raila Odinga, describing her as a key figure in the opposition and an influential leader in the Coast region.
Orengo Praises Jumwa’s Political Influence
Orengo recalled that Raila Odinga had affectionately nicknamed Jumwa "Mekatilili wa Menza," comparing her to the fearless Mijikenda heroine to emphasize her bold and effective political style. He expressed confidence that her entry into Linda Mwananchi would boost opposition efforts across counties including Kilifi, Lamu, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Mombasa, and Kwale.
"Aisha Jumwa has been close to the heart of Raila Amollo Odinga, and her absence in his political work was always felt," Orengo said. "Her eloquence and leadership will help transform lives in the Coast and beyond."
Jumwa’s Departure from UDA
Jumwa resigned from UDA citing feelings of betrayal and humiliation despite her early support for President Ruto. She criticized the party for sidelining her, including being denied a government appointment and excluded from key meetings with the president and Coast leaders.
She also opposed UDA’s approach to the Kilifi gubernatorial race, condemning what she described as imposed zoning arrangements that undermined fair party nominations.
Her move to Linda Mwananchi is seen as a strategic boost for the opposition’s presence in the coastal region ahead of upcoming political contests.
