John Philip Gichohi Kaguchia, representing Mukurwe-ini Constituency since 2022, has quickly established himself as a prominent and outspoken legislator from Nyeri County.
Born in Kiuu village, Kaguchia is the third-born son of Richard Kaguchia and Mercy Wangechi. His education journey began at Githi Primary School and continued to Lenana High School. Known locally as 'Waathi Mweru,' he demonstrated leadership early on.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Kenyatta University, where he also served as chairman of the Kenyatta University Students’ Association. Kaguchia further advanced his studies with a Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Studies, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the University of Nairobi and Kenya School of Law respectively. He is a practicing advocate and member of the Law Society of Kenya.
Before his parliamentary career, Kaguchia worked in the corporate sector, including as a customer care coordinator at Nairobi Water & Sewerage Company. In 2012, he was nominated as Speaker of the Nyeri County Assembly, a role he held for a decade and where he earned accolades such as the 'Best Speaker' award at the Kenya County Gala Awards.
Parliamentary Career and Political Stance
In the 2022 general election, Kaguchia unseated the incumbent MP to represent Mukurwe-ini, a constituency with about 110,000 residents primarily engaged in coffee and dairy farming. His legal expertise and grassroots connections have shaped his approach to governance.
Since taking office, Kaguchia has been an outspoken critic of government policies, highlighting issues such as alleged enforced disappearances, blood shortages in hospitals, and fiscal management concerns. His political alignment with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has attracted both support and scrutiny.
On August 3, 2026, Kaguchia was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at Royal Media Services in Nairobi following comments he made warning Mt Kenya residents against backing President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. He denied any wrongdoing, asserting that his statements were misrepresented.
Constituency Impact and Future Outlook
Despite controversies, Kaguchia has contributed positively to Mukurwe-ini’s development, with the constituency ranking highly in national delivery assessments by mid-2026. He serves on the Procedure and House Rules Committee and prioritizes budgeting, infrastructure, water access, and legislative reforms.
Married to Dr. Susan Njoki Kaguchia, the couple has three children. As Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections, Kaguchia remains a key figure in Mt Kenya politics, advocating for accountability and resisting intimidation tactics.
