Kenyan javelin star Julius Yego has officially ended his Commonwealth Games career following his exit at the 2026 Glasgow Games.
Yego, the 2014 Commonwealth champion, competed in what he confirmed would be his final appearance at the Games but failed to qualify for the final round. He finished 13th overall with a best throw of 74.50 meters, falling short of the automatic qualifying standard of 84.00 meters. With fewer than 12 athletes meeting this mark, the remaining spots were filled by the next best performers, but Yego’s distance was insufficient to advance.
Qualification Highlights
- Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, winner of the 2026 Kipkeino Classic, led the qualifiers with a throw of 82.84m.
- Grenada’s Anderson Peters followed closely with 81.29m.
- South Africa’s Douw Smit secured third place in qualification with 80.64m.
Yego retires as one of Kenya’s most decorated field athletes, having claimed the Commonwealth title in Glasgow in 2014, the World Championship gold in 2015, and an Olympic silver medal in 2016.
