Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revealed plans to deploy a nationwide parallel vote-tallying system during Kenya's 2027 General Election. The initiative aims to complement the official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking at a rally in Kajiado East on August 1, 2026, Kalonzo emphasized the role of technology and youth participation in safeguarding the electoral process. He highlighted that Generation Z agents, equipped with mobile phones, will collect and transmit polling station results directly before the official IEBC tally is released.
Key features of the plan include:
- Use of young agents stationed across polling centres
- Real-time transmission of results via mobile devices
- Independent announcement of results at local levels, such as individual polling stations
Kalonzo criticized ongoing discussions about proposed election law amendments, particularly those concerning the live streaming and transmission of results. He insisted that the opposition’s parallel system would ensure transparency regardless of any legal changes.
"We will have our Gen Z agents everywhere with phones. Results will be sent before 6 pm, and we will know if the opposition has won," Kalonzo stated, referring to the anticipated outcome in the election.
The announcement comes amid conflicting narratives about the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The IEBC has dismissed claims that the bill intends to ban live broadcasts of election results or revert to manual vote counting methods reminiscent of 2007.
In a statement released on July 30, 2026, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon clarified that the bill aims to introduce alternative result transmission mechanisms in areas lacking adequate 3G network coverage, not to eliminate electronic systems.
This development marks a significant step in the opposition's election strategy, focusing on transparency and verification through technological innovation and youth engagement.
