Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has disclosed that the Azimio coalition is actively negotiating with several political figures and parties to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo said the coalition leadership has been mandated to reach out to like-minded political entities as preparations intensify. Among those engaged are the Democracy for Citizens Party led by Rigathi Gachagua and the People’s Liberation Party headed by Martha Karua.
"We are in talks with the Democracy for Citizens Party and are also re-engaging with the PLP," Kalonzo stated, emphasizing the urgency as the election year unfolds.
Additionally, the coalition is courting former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has shown interest in joining Azimio during its rebranding phase.
Kalonzo also mentioned discussions with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who leads the Linda Mwananchi initiative, currently seeking official registration as a political party.
"We wish them well as they pursue registration of Linda Mwananchi," he added.
United Opposition Seeks a Common Front
The coalition continues consultations to present a united opposition front against President William Ruto. While no official presidential or running mate candidates have been announced, notable endorsements are emerging.
The Luhya Council of Elders recently endorsed Senator Edwin Sifuna for the presidency under the United Opposition banner. Vice Chair Noah Wekesa highlighted Sifuna’s broad appeal, noting his campaign tours across nearly 17 counties and strong public support.
- Wekesa expressed confidence in Sifuna’s ability to unite diverse voter bases beyond the Western region.
- He urged Sifuna to collaborate with other opposition leaders to consolidate efforts for a leadership change.
"We encourage him to join others in the effort to produce new leadership in Kenya," Wekesa said, acknowledging the competitive field within the opposition.
As the 2027 elections approach, Azimio’s outreach to key political figures underscores its strategy to build a wider coalition capable of challenging the incumbent government.
