Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, and Eugene Wamalwa convened in Nairobi on August 4, 2026, to advance efforts aimed at uniting parties opposed to President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The meeting brought together Kalonzo, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front and Azimio coalition, Gachagua of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), and Wamalwa from the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K). According to a joint statement, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to forming a united opposition front capable of presenting Kenyans with a credible alternative government.

Focus on Opposition Unity

The discussions centred on the political direction of the country and the need for sustained collaboration among opposition parties. The leaders agreed on consolidating their forces to pursue a shared national agenda, describing the meeting as a significant milestone in ongoing unity efforts.

Kalonzo emphasized the importance of continued engagement, stating, "We continue our engagements, strengthening the unity of the Opposition as we work together to restore hope and deliver the Kenya that our people deserve."

Momentum Builds for Broad Alliance

This meeting followed the recent Azimio coalition resolutions to expand membership, including welcoming former Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i and Peter Munya, as well as former Senator Lenny Kivuti. Azimio also invited other political parties to join and mandated Kalonzo to engage with like-minded groups, including Gachagua’s DCP and the Linda Mwananchi Movement.

Although Gachagua has not formally aligned DCP with Azimio, consultations between opposition leaders have increased in recent weeks, signalling a push to build a broad coalition ahead of the presidential race.

Changing Opposition Landscape
