Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has commended Ol Kalou constituents for resisting vote-buying during the recent parliamentary by-election, describing their stance as a blueprint to defeat politicians who depend on monetary inducements.
Speaking in Mbeere South, Embu County on August 2, 2026, Kalonzo revealed that voters in Ol Kalou were offered various items such as mattresses, cooking gas cylinders, and cash before the polls. Despite these attempts, the electorate stood firm against electoral malpractice.
"Here we have found the formula to send Kasongo home," Kalonzo declared, referencing the defeated candidate, to enthusiastic applause.
The former Vice President emphasized that this example reflects growing political awareness among Kenyans, who are increasingly rejecting bribery during elections.
Promoting Peace and Unity in Mbeere
Kalonzo also highlighted efforts to foster harmony among the Kamba, Mbeere, and Embu communities, recalling his collaboration with former Mbeere South MP Geoffrey King’ang’i during the Building Bridges Initiative period to ease ethnic tensions.
"I urged that we unite the people of Mbeere to live peacefully without hostility between the Kamba, Mbeere, and Embu," he said.
Hints of Opposition Coalition Ahead of 2027 Polls
At the same rally, Kalonzo alluded to ongoing efforts to consolidate opposition leaders to mount a strong challenge against President William Ruto in the upcoming general election.
He conveyed greetings from prominent figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, PLP leader Martha Karua, and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, urging the crowd to support them.
He further suggested that more leaders, including supporters of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, may join the alliance soon.
"If we unite, where will the president get support? Think about it," Kalonzo questioned, signaling confidence in the opposition’s prospects.
