Kalonzo Musyoka Denies Uhuru Kenyatta Is Leading Opposition Strategy Against Ruto

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has refuted claims that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is directing opposition efforts to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

Speaking at the ACK Cathedral in Embu, Kalonzo emphasized that opposition leaders are independently formulating their strategies and cautioned against depicting Uhuru as the mastermind behind a political campaign targeting Ruto.

"Do not paint a picture that Uhuru is organising us to face Ruto. We are organising ourselves to face Ruto and nobody will do it for us," Kalonzo stated.

The Wiper leader clarified that the upcoming meeting chaired by Uhuru as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Council chair is focused on strengthening the coalition rather than plotting against the current administration.

"The meeting Uhuru chairs on Monday is just about moving Azimio forward and not arranging how to tackle Ruto," he added.

Kalonzo noted that Uhuru’s involvement should be seen in the context of his role as council chair and not as the architect of opposition political plans.

"Uhuru is a retired President, but he is also the council chair of Azimio la Umoja. I am the party leader of Azimio," he explained. "Do not make Ruto panic that Uhuru is plotting against him. He is just there to make sure Azimio as a political organisation moves to the next level and brings everybody on board."

Media reports have speculated that Uhuru’s leadership at the Azimio meeting is part of efforts to reorganise the opposition ahead of the elections, aiming to form a stronger political front against the Kenya Kwanza administration. However, Kalonzo reaffirmed that opposition leaders are driving their own political agenda.

"Uhuru is not organising us. We are doing it ourselves," he said.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, which includes parties such as ODM, Wiper, and Jubilee, was formed ahead of the 2022 general election around Raila Odinga’s presidential bid. Despite their loss to William Ruto, the coalition continues to seek unity and a shared political direction ahead of the next polls.
