Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has dismissed allegations that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is masterminding a major opposition coalition in preparation for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at a church service at ACK St Peter’s Cathedral in Embu Town on August 2, 2026, Kalonzo emphasized that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition is independently charting its political path without Uhuru’s direct orchestration.

Defined Role for Uhuru

Kalonzo clarified that although Uhuru serves as the Chair of the Council of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, his involvement is limited and should not be misconstrued as controlling the coalition’s strategies.

“Uhuru is a retired president and the Chair of Azimio’s Council, but the narrative that he is planning everything is false. Each party in Azimio has its own leadership,” Kalonzo stated.

Calls for Respect and Political Decorum

The Wiper leader urged President William Ruto and state agencies to respect the former president and avoid unwarranted political attacks or harassment.

“There is no need for panic or for President Ruto to start targeting Uhuru or for institutions like KRA to harass him. Our focus is on advancing Azimio la Umoja One Kenya as a political force,” Kalonzo added.

Azimio’s Independent Strategy

Kalonzo highlighted the coalition’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its structures and expand its membership ahead of the next elections.

“We are working smartly, sometimes engaging international partners discreetly to support Kenya’s interests,” he explained.

Deputy Jubilee Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni echoed Kalonzo’s sentiments on June 29, 2026, defending Uhuru’s continuing influence despite the absence of any formal political title.

Kioni remarked, “There is no official office called kingpin, but if there were, Uhuru Kenyatta would hold it due to his widespread respect across communities.”

As opposition leaders continue consultations to bolster cooperation for 2027, Uhuru remains a central figure in coalition discussions, though his role is clearly defined and not one of direct control.
