Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly denied reports suggesting he is considering collaboration with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 general elections. Instead, he reaffirmed his commitment to remain in the opposition and spearhead efforts to unseat the current president.
Speaking ahead of the official start of the election year in August, Kalonzo emphasized the constitutional timeline for the elections and called on opposition supporters to intensify preparations. "The election date is clearly stipulated in the Constitution," he noted, urging unity and focus among opposition ranks.
Political speculation has recently placed Kalonzo among the leading contenders for the opposition presidential ticket, with various parties seeking to form a united front to challenge the incumbent. Despite overtures from Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders encouraging him to join forces with President Ruto, Kalonzo dismissed these advances.
Addressing rumours of recent meetings with President Ruto, Kalonzo clarified that he had been abroad, traveling from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, making such talks impossible. He described the reports as attempts by the president's camp to sow confusion within the opposition.
"If I’ll be the last man to drive Ruto out, I will," Kalonzo declared, underscoring his determination to lead the charge against the government in the upcoming polls.
Opposition Dynamics Ahead of 2027
The opposition continues to deliberate on selecting a consensus presidential candidate, with Kalonzo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and other leaders prominent in discussions about forming a united front. These developments coincide with preparations by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) focusing on electoral reforms and logistical planning for the elections.
