Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly dismissed claims that he is planning to collaborate with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election. Instead, Kalonzo reaffirmed his commitment to remain in opposition and lead the charge to unseat the current president.
Speaking as Kenya enters the official election year in August, Kalonzo emphasized that the election date is constitutionally fixed and urged opposition supporters to intensify their preparations for the upcoming polls.
"Tomorrow is the 31st. We enter the election year in August. This election, the date for the same is clearly written in the Constitution," Kalonzo stated, adding that President Ruto and his supporters are unsettled by the opposition's readiness.
Dismissal of Meeting Rumors
Kalonzo also rejected reports suggesting he recently met with President Ruto, clarifying that he was out of the country during the alleged meeting. He recounted his recent travels from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, questioning how such a meeting could have occurred while he was abroad.
"I was in Zanzibar, just for full disclosure. After having a breakfast meeting with editors, I took off from Zanzibar. Yesterday I took a boat from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam. I was leaving Dar es Salaam this morning at five," he explained.
Opposition Unity and 2027 Election Plans
The Wiper leader is among several opposition figures vying to become the united front's presidential candidate. Discussions are ongoing on how to prevent vote splitting among opposition parties to enhance their chances against the incumbent.
Despite overtures from Kenya Kwanza coalition leaders encouraging him to join forces with President Ruto, Kalonzo remains resolute in building a strong opposition campaign. He vowed, "If I'll be the last man to drive Ruto out, I will."
As the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) steps up preparations, including electoral reforms and campaign regulations, political activities among opposition leaders are intensifying ahead of the 2027 polls.
